Even though the game is only in Early Access, there are plenty of major updates to Phasmophobia this year, both big and small, as the developers improve upon the already enjoyable ghost-hunting experience. Although many flashy features are emerging, the most recent additions show that it is clear that the development team is going back to the basics of the game and improving the overall experience.
The Truck Overhaul Update (v0.6.2.0) improves one of the first impressions new players have of the game, changing it for the better with regards to aesthetics and practicality. Although this update contains a number of basic bug fixes and practical changes, there are also some interesting new additions to the game. From a new truck skin to the addition of three new types of ghosts, the Truck Overhaul Update has new and exciting things to enjoy.
8 upgraded truck
As the namesake of this update, it’s only fair that the truck’s interior got a massive update. Notably, the equipment is now mounted on the wall of the truck. This gives the gear section a much cleaner look, with players able to identify their gear quantities at a glance, rather than wasting valuable setup time searching through shelves. While the ability to re-wall items will only be included in the next custom difficulty update, this change is certainly for the better.
Along with this change, the surveillance computer is now located in the rear of the truck, rather than previously on the far left, making it much quicker and easier to monitor ghost activity remotely. The Map screen has also been updated, allowing for easier navigation between the different floors of the maps that you and your team explore. Instead of a single button to change floors, the Map screen now has up and down arrows to change floors.
7 Item Quantities Increased
It can be very frustrating when you’re playing a four-person game of Phasmophobia and there isn’t enough gear for each player to have one equipped. This is especially noticeable with items that ‘deplete’ such as salt shakers, as an accidental placement could be the deciding factor in completing an objective.
The latest update begins to combat this, increasing the number of equipable lighters to a total of four, meaning each member of your ghost hunting team can carry one. There’s also an increase in the number of Salt Shakers to three, meaning a misplaced pile of salt won’t be the end of the world.
6 Maple Lodge Bonfire
As the only outdoor map in the game, Maple Lodge Campsite is a favorite for those who like to switch up their ghost hunting locations. Introduced in the Nightmare update, this map also has a lot of interesting Easter Eggs and references to famous horror franchises.
This update adds to the exciting aspects of the Maple Lodge camp, which now allows players to light the campfire located to the left of the map. Using a lighter or lit candle, you can approach the campfire and ‘use’ the item, allowing the campfire to light up. While this doesn’t do much more than provide a nice light source, it’s a fun item to have on the map. It does not affect the readings of the freezing temperature thermometer, but if you point the thermometer directly at it, it will read as a very high temperature.
5 More multiplayer hideouts
Although Phasmophobia is a great game to play alone, the multiplayer mode allows you to play with friends or pair up with other ghost hunters online to work together to solve cases. With this game mode gaining in popularity, it’s only fitting that it’s gotten a bit of an update.
After the Truck Overhaul update, the number of free hideouts on each different map is now increased in multiplayer games. When there are a total of three players, there will be one additional free hideout, and when there are a total of four players, there will be two additional free hideouts. This has been a much-needed update and will come in handy, especially when you need a quick, free hideout when the ghost begins its hunt.
4 Voice recognition system replaced
After some issues with the in-game speech recognition system in general, players will be pleased to learn that the old system has been completely replaced in this new update. This means that many more languages and platforms are supported, greatly expanding the international accessibility of the game.
Alongside this are new input options that players can use, especially useful for those who don’t live alone or live with pets. You will now be able to adjust the sensitivity of the voice detector on your microphone, as well as turn on noise suppression, which means background noise from external factors won’t affect your gameplay, especially when you’re trying to hide from the ghost.
Based on a type of vampire from Romanian folklore, the Moroi is one of the new ghosts added to the game. The Moroi has the ability to ‘curse’ players he talks to through the Spirit Box, causing his sanity to decrease over time. The journal says that “the weaker its victims, the stronger the Moroi become”, which means that those with fallen sanity will become easy targets for the ghost, and the lower the average sanity, the faster will be the ghost
Fortunately, this ‘curse’ can be broken when sanity pills are consumed, however it is important to note that Moroi can curse multiple players at once. The types of evidence required to identify Moroi are Spirit Box, Ghost Writing, and Frosting Temperatures.
Based on a Flemish tale from the 18th century, Deogen is another one of the new ghost types that have been added to Phasmophobia, adding to the substantial list of ghost types. However, unlike other ghosts, you cannot hide from the Deogen, which means that when one starts a hunt, the only option is to run around the map and run around the ghost until the hunt is over. Fortunately, the Deogen is a very slow entity, which means that the only real risk you face during a hunt is if you get backed into a corner.
When facing one of these ghosts, having Smudge Sticks gives you an advantage, as they stun the Deogen, allowing you to get out of a tight spot if you need to. The best way to protect yourself from a Deogen is to simply create distance between yourself and the ghost. The three types of evidence that help identify Deogen are the Spirit Box, Ghost Writing, and DOTS Projector.
Originating from Myanmar folklore, Thaye is the third type of ghost that has been added to Phasmophobia in this new update. The Thaye has been observed to exhibit almost the opposite behavior of a Shade, with activity decreasing over time rather than increasing. This means collecting evidence much later in the game could present a challenge to players, meaning identifying a Thaye as quickly as possible is an advantage.
The types of evidence required to identify a Thaye are Ghost Orbs, Ghost Writing, and DOTS Projector.
