Please help figure out if this person is an idiot for not wanting to attend a Game Of Thrones themed wedding.

We all have that dream wedding, whether it’s a traditional one at a church or religious institution or a themed/destination one. However, there should be a line when it comes to weddings, at least to the point where it’s not an annoyance or an inconvenience to the guest. And that’s the case for this Reddit user, who feels undecided as to whether or not he’s the jerk for deciding that he no longer wants to attend a game of Thrones-themed wedding.

Reddit user u/Fluffy_Strain6713 shared their dilemma on r/AmITheAsshole, where they were invited to a game of Thrones-Themed destination wedding. According to OP, they liked dressing up and even traveling to the event. They also don’t mind that their friend and fiancé are die-hard Game of Thrones fans.

The only thing that changed their minds was the fact that the entire ceremony and reception would be spoken in High Valyrian (the show’s fictional language). Speeches and toasts were even expected to be in that language. They talked to her friend about it, but the ‘bride-to-be’ was upset that she changed her mind and gave her resources to learn a language the OP isn’t interested in.

Fortunately for OP, a lot of game of Thrones The fans who saw the post are on his side. Some joked about the idea of it being a wedding based on the hit fantasy show and how they expected to see a ‘red wedding’ type situation, similar to the show.

Others agreed with OP and that they have the right to back out if they are forced to do something they are not interested in. At the same time, they also don’t think ‘Lexi’ is a bad person. Well, themed weddings are quite common. They also suggested to OP that if they go, they don’t have to say anything since they’re not required to.

Some also wondered if any of the other guests spoke High Valyrian, considering that learning a new language is hard enough. And much less, a fictitious one.

However, some started poking holes in the OP’s post because they didn’t think everyone was expected to speak the language. So they have started giving ‘workarounds’ to help OP give a valid reason as to why they no longer want to attend the event.

Some were trying to figure out what makes High Valyrian different from learning Norwegian or another foreign language. Some Reddit users pointed out that what makes the two situations different is due to the cross cultures between the couples and their families. So it makes sense that those languages would be acceptable. They also argued that you can use the language if you visit another country.

Learning a fictional language that not many people understand or would not use is completely different.

Most people thought that OP is not the jerk and that they have the right to refuse and not attend the event. They cannot be forced to speak another language that does not interest them. But what do you think? Does OP have legs to stand on when it comes to canceling his plans to attend his friend’s wedding? Or should they create a Duolingo account and start learning?
