News hardware PS5: new patented controllers… for the PSVR 2?
New patents are a fairly customary technique for companies to protect their inventions, without there being any guarantee that they will really be marketed one day. They nevertheless exhibit some rather interesting technologies, like these new controllers created by Sony…
Grip for the PSVR 2?
We hear a lot about the PlayStation VR 2 these days: first through the rave reviews of certain developers, but also through rumors of presentation, allowed thanks to a series of strange emails which would have been sent directly by Sony. As a result, many are expecting an event shortly, entirely focused on the virtual reality headset.
To keep up with the news, a user spotted a new patent filed by the Japanese manufacturermade public on March 31, 2022 only. This one features a duo of controllers that seem dedicated to PSVR 2, both featuring some sort of wrist strap (some will even speak of a small “belt”) to tie the user’s hand.
An inspiration from the Valve Index?
One of the theories cited would be the inspiration of the Valve Index “Knuckles”: these controllers use a grip system allowing the player to let go to use their fingers, captured by a system that allows them to transcribe their movements in-game. An ergonomic way to enhance immersion in the game.
On the other hand, these patents show controllers that are decidedly different from the official photos, already unveiled by Sony months ago now. Some think that it is simply their initial prototype and that the system presented on the sketches will indeed be implemented on the final object. Others believe that it is simply a patent presenting a technology now protected, but which will not necessarily be commercialized (which is quite likely).
PSVR 2 still doesn’t have a release date. According to rumors from the corridors, this would not take place before 2023.
