PS5: the console still absent from the shelves
It was two years ago almost to the day: Sony unveiled the price and release date of the PlayStation 5, a new generation console with promises of ultra-fast loading and very high definition graphics. Two years later, we will let everyone respond to their feelings about the promises, but one thing is certain: the console is rarely there. Literally. It was in the wake of a press release from Amazon indicating the wave of next invitations to buy the console (or the Xbox Series) that the gaming community was outraged:
It’s crazy how in 2 months the PS5 will be 2 years old and you still can’t walk into a store and buy it normally.
It must be recognized that the observation is surprising and legitimate: normally in two years of existence, the consoles benefit from reductions often linked to the publication of new models by the manufacturers. There, it is the opposite path that Sony took with the PlayStation 5. No new model (officially planned at least) and a console price hike in some markets.
On the Reddit social network, some users go there with their own story to testify to the scarcity of consoles. Some are faced with surreal scenes where the PS5 is being sold under the counter like it’s drugs while other sellers are just happy to keep up with the demand. A demand much higher than production: the latter has been subject since the end of 2020 to the health crisis which is placing greater strain on the microprocessor market. In addition, Sony and Xbox are pulling each other a little in the paws since they have the same supplier with AMD. The principle of communicating vessels is therefore applied: at any request from one, the other finds himself in an embarrassing situation.
Nevertheless, we must try to see the glass half full. While it is still difficult to obtain new generation consoles in our usual stores, the situation seems to be calming down on the scalpers : these individuals had the habit, with special software, of buying consoles en masse when they were available to resell them at exorbitant prices. Don’t get us wrong: some are still taking advantage of the situation to make money by reselling the more expensive console, but distributors have found a way today to maximize the chances of making someone happy. It’s already that.
