Quentin Tarantino loved Top Gun: Maverick. The Kill Bill director gave a rare rave review about the Tom Cruise-directed sequel that has broken box office records all summer.
“I don’t normally talk much about new movies because I’m only forced to say good things, but in this case I love Top Gun, the Maverick movie,” he told CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast. (opens in a new tab). “I thought it was fantastic. I saw it in theaters. It was, as our mutual good friend Brett Easton Ellis says, that and [Steven] Spielberg’s West Side Story provided a true cinematic spectacle, the kind I almost thought I’d never see again.”
Tarantino admitted that he had some reservations when he learned that the sequel would continue without Tony Scott. The director of the original Top Gun movie was involved in the early stages of the sequel but sadly passed away in 2012. Maverick was directed by Joseph Kosinski with Cruise, Val Kilmer and executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer returning.
“It wasn’t much of a concern,” Tarantino revealed of his conversation with Cruise. “I figure if he was going to do it, he handles it well. But I asked him, I said, ‘How do you do Top Gun without Tony Scott?'” Cruise told him at the time that they would. they figured out a way to do it, and most importantly, they had a good story.
Tarantino called the callbacks to Scott “delightful”. “It’s the closest we’ll ever get to seeing another Tony Scott movie,” he added. “And it was fucking great.”
Top Gun: Maverick is still in theaters where it has currently grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, and the number continues to rise. However, for updates on when Top Gun: Maverick is due out, check out our guide to its Paramount Plus release.
