the Mortal Kombat The logo is arguably one of the most recognizable in all of gaming: the silhouetted dragon that swoops down to resemble the Yin and Yang symbol is stunning in its sheer simplicity.

However, it almost didn’t if co-creator John Tobias had heard a comment from his sister, who mistakenly thought the original dragon sketch was actually a seahorse (thanks, Golden News).

The fun bomb comes as part of a thread recently posted by Tobias as he dives into the creation of the now-iconic Mortal Kombat logo. In it, he comments on how the logo is representative of both the game itself and the game’s tournament, explaining that the use of the dragon was inspired by the title ‘Dragon Attack’, which was in contention to become the official title of the game. before Tobias and Ed Boon decided on ‘Mortal Kombat’.

As for the dragon design itself, Tobias tells a brief story of when Mortal Kombat developer John Vogel noticed a statue of a dragon on Midway GM Ken Fedesna’s desk. Vogel borrowed the statue for use in the game’s backgrounds, but Tobias also used the dragon as inspiration for the game’s tournament, sketching out cabinet designs before implementing them into the logo.

It’s a fascinating look at the creation of such an amazing logo and how quickly it was almost derailed by a comment! As for the franchise itself, fans are currently speculating about the eventual reveal of mortal kombat 12 following the notable success of Mortal Kombat 11, which was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019.
