Do you remember gaming magazines? remember how incredible They were? Yes, some of them are still making the rounds to this day; in the UK, we have people like Edge, wireframe, retro gamerY change player to name just a few, but for those who grew up in the 80s, 90s and 2000s, magazines like ngamer, CVGY bad machines were the absolutes bees knees.
One thing they all had in common was their memorable video game commercials. Often printed on one or two pages, these didn’t just show off a bunch of key art and be done with it; no, they were creative and often hilarious. Some had a kind of quirky “DIY” element, with duct tape being used to stick multiple images on top of each other to create a mockup of what a certain game would look like.
That’s exactly what the artist Kemmo (@Kemmo_Ado) has done so with its rather brilliant Switch announcements of Splatoon 3, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Metroid Dread. Going for the rather simple yet brilliant tagline “Who are you?”, the ads effectively combine key art from the respective games in real-life settings; for example, you have poor Samus lying in bed while one of the deadly EMMI robots lurks below – shiny stuff!
