Random: Xenoblade Chronicles’ Shulk Scene Was Originally ‘A Little Creepy’

Xenoblade Chronicles protagonist Shulk is well known in the Nintendo community as the picture of innocence; a truly noble hero who always puts his friends and allies first. Apparently, though, according to a recent Did You Know Gaming video, Shulk’s actions during one of the game’s cutscenes alarmed scenario writer Yurie Hattori, who was hired during the game’s development.

As noted by series executive director Tetsuya Takahashi, Hattori-san was concerned that Shulk’s decision to touch an unconscious Fiora’s cheek to express his feelings for her could be interpreted as creepy. As such, the action was changed for the final game, with Shulk touching Fiora’s hand.

Takahashi said the following:

“One issue pointed out by Hattori-san that I can clearly recall concerns the girl named Fiora, Shulk’s childhood friend. There is a scene where she is fast asleep and you touch her hand. This was initially a scene where the one where Shulk touched her cheek to communicate his feelings for her. But Hattori-san pointed out that suddenly touching a woman’s cheek while she’s sleeping could be interpreted as a bit creepy.”

As far as potentially creepy scenes go, this one is certainly on the tame side, but we can see what Hattori-san was heading for. Apparently, the decision was made to change Shulk’s action in order to preserve the “innocent and naïve nature of the character’s love”.

It’s an interesting insight into how such small actions can have a huge impact on how players greet a protagonist. Monolith Soft was particularly concerned about what Shulk would look like, given that RPG fans tend to hate vocal protagonists who prefer a silent avatar, and the studio was careful to ensure that the character would not make decisions that the player would take. finally resent.
