Reddit ponders, how would the world react to a real life Superman?

Superhero stories exist for a reason. They are inspiring, fun and allow us to imagine what it would be like if superhumans really existed. On the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit, user DenisBastardMan wondered how people would react to a real situation. Superman.

Most people, like DCmarvelman, went straight to the most plausible answer: humanity would go insane.

“The religious world would go crazy. Russia and China would go crazy. Everything Jonathan feared when he was faced with the bus dilemma.”

User NexoNerd101 agreed with that sentiment.

“To be very honest, like Man of Steel and BvS.

“If there was a super powerful being [sic] Who had the ability to fly and supersonic speeds, the strength to literally move a house, can shoot lightning bolts from their eyes and smash huge trucks like their cardboard? I guarantee you the whole world would be scared beyond comprehension.”

User Grouchy_Kick_3921 said that Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice he was actually quite good at playing this very scenario.

“BvS was incredibly accurate on this matter. He would be loved and hated, feared and respected, called an American hero and a Russian spy. No matter what he does, his act would be political and there would always be someone who would hate him. Even if he saves a cat from a tree, someone with a dog would complain. ‘Polarize’, to put it briefly”.

This was backed up by user Araella who talked about Superman dealing with the public and trying to handle the PR aspect.

“That’s why I love the movie. It’s exactly how I imagine the audience would react to knowing that someone like Superman is real. And although he is not popular, I think his reaction is also on point. He takes his time coming to terms with the public and tries to find the best way to do good while dealing with the treatment he receives*. He had to realize the good and bad that comes with being in the public eye as humanity struggles to come to terms with him simply existing, and we see him starting to pick himself up towards the end. It would have been a beautiful bow and I wish we could have seen it.”

Others expressed fear, such as MuMbLe145, who shared that someone with the power of Superman would be incredibly dangerous.

“Personally I would be terrified if Superman or someone like him were real. No one should have that kind of power, yes, if used correctly he can be a hero, but the odds of that are slim.”

The consensus seems to be that reactions would be mixed and go to extremes. User MrKevora said the same thing in his reply.

“…Some would deify him and treat him like a god. Others would just look up to him as a savior who can make the world a better place. Others would condemn him and politically question his authority, while others (who see him as a threat or who suffer from mental illness) would want to kill him or ruin his reputation by resorting to terrorism and accusing him of it. All these aspects were shown very accurately by BvS”.

An insightful comment from Guardian_Of_Light2 explained that it would be reminiscent of the show. Smallville.

“A similar thing happened in Smallville when Clark revealed his identity as the Red-Blue Blur: acceptance at first, a warm feeling of welcome (and) gratitude, then the recklessness of people thinking Clark will save them, then blaming him when accidents happen. and he’s not around and he can’t be everywhere at once.”

User no2ing drew a parallel to the hit show. Boyswhere Homelander is basically what happens when a corporation tries to make a Superman from scratch.

“Everyone would love to be Superman, a symbol of hope for humanity, but in the end humanity would just mentally destroy him and create an even more mentally deranged homebody. They would create someone who just doesn’t care and we would be collateral damage for some of their supposed heroic saves.”

In fact, Homelander connections keep popping up, including this one from razor1859.

“Well, the kents wouldn’t deal with him since the government has eyes everywhere. and he would be tested and become a lab baby, and eventually, he would break free after developing so much hatred for the human population, and just become an inhabitant of the homeland with no validation needed. Truly terrifying shit.

However, probably the most concise comment belongs to MrBravo.

“They would expect him to pick a side.”

Whatever happens, many do not think it is good.
