One of the most iconic scenes of any Wonderful The film is the final battle in iron man 2. The climactic showdown saw Iron Man and his good friend James “Rhodey” Rhodes in his classic War machine armor surrounded by a group of Iron Man drones controlled by the great villain of the film, Whiplash.
During the fight, War Machine splits a robot in half using his suit’s arm cannon. To be honest, it’s a memorable scene that showed how cool War Machine could be. Fans are now saying that he is as good as he ever was as far as the character goes.
Check out that battle scene below.
On the r/Marvelstudios subreddit, user YoitsBlackIce posited that things may never be this exciting for War Machine again, and others agreed with that sentiment.
User -W1L3y shared that there is probably only one way to return War Machine to its former glory.
“Only if Marvel brings Genndy Tartakovsky back to choreograph more fight scenes.”
Others, like MaterTolkien, mentioned the fact that War Machine was instrumental in the great battle of Wakanda in Black Panther also.
“Yeah, I easily forgot that War Machine was doing the heavy lifting in that battle in Wakanda until that hammer gun took him down. He was absolutely tearing enemies apart by the dozens.”
User joemiken pointed out that despite getting a cool suit upgrade, War Machine didn’t do much in End of the game.
“His bombing run was the last cool thing he ever did. He got the cool suit upgrade in Endgame (which happened out of the blue and was never explained), but I don’t remember him doing anything with it.”
It’s hard to think about the wasted potential, as user GuilRosmer pointed out in the post.
“In all seriousness, it looks like we’ve barely seen anything from him in a long time. Even when he has appeared in more recent things, his roles have always been pretty minor.
“I hope Armor Wars really gives him some kind of character arc. Because the last important thing that would happen to him would be his injury in Civil War. He’s been around then, but he hasn’t really done anything unique to James Rhodes/War Machine outside of some one-liners and dialogue.
“I was present in Infinity War/End Game, but so were 30 other characters. He hasn’t had anything to progress his own story in a long time.”
There was also the fact that he was on the side of the government in Captain America: Civil Waras user BatoftheFuture pointed out.
I feel like Civil War/Infinity War missed the opportunity to do a story about him learning that blindly following the government isn’t always the right thing to do. They should have given him the role of Spider-Man from the comics and switched sides to Team Cap.
Nobody put it more succinctly than user stateofbrine:
“iron man 2 it was peak.”
User jayvenomva answered that.
“So basically everything has gone downhill since his introduction.”
While there are several complaints, the main complaint is that War Machine was not taken advantage of and many fans agree that War Machine is a top-tier character who needs a bigger role. We hope that Phase 5 will allow that to happen.
