Remember the Jeff Bridges/Ryan Reynolds Men in Black RIPD from 2013? Nope? You’re not alone, as the nearly ten-year-old film opened to scathing reviews and dismal box office receipts. Despite some potential in the chemistry between its two leads, a great bad boy performance from Kevin Bacon, and some amusing visual effects, the film was received as an abyss where imagination and entertainment go to die.
Obviously then, it makes a lot of sense to put out a sequel.
Bloody Disgusting reports that Universal Home Entertainment is apparently preparing a sequel by the name of RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned. We don’t know much about the movie except that it will be rated PG-13. There’s also no word on who will be in the movie, though it seems unlikely that Jeff Bridges or Ryan Reynolds will return. This is more likely to be some sort of VOD effort, but we’ll have to wait and see what else is announced in the coming weeks.
Based on a very enjoyable Dark Horse comic book series, RIPD still has ample potential to become a well-made and entertaining film project. The basis for the source material and the film has a man whose sudden and mysterious murder puts him in the service of a law enforcement agency tasked with managing the seeming chaos of the afterlife. There’s more than enough in that single premise for a good movie or two, or maybe even a series. RIPD as a property only has one movie, which doesn’t have too many fans.
