Will Ferrell have heard of Ryan Reynold’His “embarrassing” plan and he wants in, sort of. The duo’s song “Good afternoon” from the musical film. Energetic is on the shortlist for the 2023 Oscars for Best Original Song, and Reynolds already knows how he’ll celebrate the potential nomination.
Earlier this month, Reynolds admitted he was willing to “go on stage and be embarrassed” if “Good Afternoon” is officially nominated. We’d love to see Reynolds perform the song at the awards ceremony, but “Good Afternoon” is ultimately a duet, and if there’s going to be a live performance, it would be even better if Will Ferrell reprises his role as Ebenezer Scrooge for the show.
Fortunately, Ferrell seems to feel the same way. In a recent interview with Deadlinethe star was asked how it felt to perform “Good Afternoon” with Reynolds, even though the musical number was difficult to master.
“Discussing those songs, the musical numbers, that was quite a feat. Seven weeks of rehearsing and coordinating all the jumps to the choreography and then performing it many times live on set that we weren’t told before. Do I also have to sing it live? But I’m proud of it and that it turned out to be a solid reason to redo A Christmas Carol. So, famous last words, if Ryan’s in, so am I.”
With Ferrell on board, the potential performance will be a memorable moment in pop culture, provided “Good Afternoon” secures the nomination. The song faces some stiff competition, with songs by The Weeknd, Taylor Swift and Rihanna also shortlisted.
The official Oscar nominations will be announced on January 24 at 8:30 am ET. We hope to see “Good Afternoon” on the official list, even if it makes Hugh Jackman’s 2023 “unbearable.”
