‘She-Hulk’ Director Reveals How To Create A Realistic Giant Green Lawyer With Super Powers

via Marvel Studios

She-Hulk: Lawyer debuted its first trailer earlier this year, giving us our first look at Tatiana Maslany as the Hulkified Jennifer Walters. It’s safe to say that Marvel Studios didn’t get the response it was hoping for, with the fully CGI She-Hulk widely criticized for being unrealistic and comparable to Shrek.

A couple of excuses followed, ranging from YouTube’s compression algorithm making the visuals look worse, to the simple fact that they’re not quite finished. Well, with the show premiering tomorrow on Disney Plus, we’ll be able to decide for ourselves. That being said, whatever the end result is, there’s no denying that the visual effects teams at Marvel Studios have put in the effort.

A new interview with director Kat Coiro on Screen Rant details the design process behind She-Hulk and how much care they put into making it look right:

“Developing She-Hulk’s look was a months-long process. We discussed strength more than aesthetics, and the big challenge was that the Hulk is this monster, he doesn’t fit into the human world, he’s an outlier. She’s a modern woman who dates, works in an office, has friends and has dinner with her family, so we had to make sure she had human proportions.”

He also said that they hired a tall actor simply to act as a visual reference while they decided what She-Hulk’s body should look like:

“We had an actress, a stand-in who was 6-foot-7 with us at all times, and we would ask her to walk around the room so we could see what her step was, and we leaned heavily on her. In terms of musculature, we wanted to create her own look rather than just being a miniature version of He-Hulk. We based it on Olympians and Misty Copeland, and these women who have incredible power but aren’t necessarily bodybuilders.”

The proof, as always, will be in the pudding. More than most Marvel Disney Plus shows, She-Hulk: Lawyer will be carefully examined for VFX flaws. That may be a bit unfair, as most shows wouldn’t be ambitious enough to have a fully CGI, human-looking main character. But hey, Disney has essentially infinite resources, so there’s technically no reason for them to cut corners.

Our hope is that She-Hulk looks a little weird at first, then becomes completely natural to the point where we forget it’s CGI. Green fingers crossed.
