‘She-Hulk’ Just Destroyed Any Hope of a Long-Awaited Superhero Team Entering the MCU

It’s fair to say that this week’s sixth episode of She-Hulk: Lawyer was something of a disappointment for fans, as it sidestepped the big Daredevil tease from the last episode to offer, in Jen’s words, a “self-contained wedding episode.” However, episode 6 was even more of a blow than you probably realised, as it actually ends our last shred of hope that a long-awaited team of superheroes could reunite in the MCU.

While Tatiana Maslany’s Jen Walters attended her friend’s wedding, the episode’s B-plot saw Mallory (Renee Elise Goldsberry) and Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) hire a new client: Craig Hollis/Mr. Immortal (David Pasquesi), a centenarian superhuman with a long history of climbing out (of the windows) of his spouses. While fans were entertained by his antics, some are upset that Marvel just ruined a perfectly good superhero from the comics.

What most people are forgetting, though, is that Mr. Immortal almost made it to live action a few years ago in the aborted new warriors T.V. series. Developed for Freeform by Marvel Television in 2017, new warriors would have followed the titular young adult supergroup, with Derek Theler among the ensemble as Craig Hollis. Milana Vayntrub was ready to lead as Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl.

Unfortunately, Freeform turned down the project after producing a pilot, and despite buying it from multiple networks, new warriors never materialized. That said, Vayntrub’s subsequent casting as Squirrel Girl in animated productions left fans hopeful that the team might work on the franchise in some form at some point. However, the introduction of Mr. Immortal, in a very different portrayal, in she-hulk finally closes the door on that potential for good.

Squirrel Girl herself may still be showing up in the MCU before long, but the chances of the New Warriors joining her now seem slim. She-Hulk: Lawyer continues Wednesdays on Disney Plus.
