The MCU is expanding and with each new project comes new characters entering the universe. With she-hulkTatiana Maslany is set to make her debut as Jennifer Walters and it seems to have been a stressful experience.
During an interview with SFX Magazine via The Direct, Maslany shared insight into his decision to join the project, explaining that he “values character above all else.”
“I’ve always been nervous going into a world like this because I value character above all else, and I didn’t know how much it would exist in bigger projects. But when I read the pilot, this was such an unexpected take on a superhero story. He is so human. There are really cool explorations of the mundanity of life, in really cool ways. And also, it’s talking about something that really interests me, which is when suddenly you start to be seen as something; then you are seen as a thing, and you become a commodity like that thing. What this show does, but in a fun and unexpected way, is deal with this idea.”
Maslany has also spoken about her experience auditioning for the role. She says that the first audition took place on Zoom and that she had no idea who was there to see it. The star later met with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and was able to examine any reservations she had about joining the show.
One of these concerns seems to have finally led to writer Jessica Gao coming on board to pen the script.
“The fact that he got Jessica Gao to write the script; that his pitch was the one that caught him. It’s so irreverent, so risky, fun and funny. I think that was a great indicator for me. But also, when you talk to Kevin, he’s like a big nerd. He loves movies, he’s excited about telling stories, and he’s very curious to try things.”
Fans don’t have long before they can see she-hulk for themselves, as the show is next on Marvel’s Disney Plus release schedule. The show will premiere on August 17, 2022.
