While Sonic Origins has seen mixed to positive reviews since its release in June, some fans have criticized the state of the re-released games, citing performance and graphical issues along with strange bugs that didn’t exist in the original games. The problems are enough that an ambitious “BetterOrigins” mod has been cancelled, with the mod’s creator leaving the game after calling it “absolute bullshit”.
TheGamer reported the mod’s cancellation, citing an update on the mod’s GameBanana page that now appears to have been removed.
“Hey, we’ve decided to stop development on this project,” read the update from project lead Xanman. “After digging into the files for this game, it’s become much clearer that this game is absolute crap. We’ve fixed enough where the game is a bit more useful but really, especially without scripts, there’s not much we can’ fix’ without just redoing the sprites”.
A version of BetterOrigins can still be downloaded from GameBanana, with multiple improvements already implemented, but it seems the mod is unlikely to get any future updates, at least not any time soon. The creator of the mod also suggested a number of add-on mods that work to fix other Sonic Origins issues.
MAYBE I’ll come back to this in the future when script editing becomes a thing. “But for now, fuck this game.”
The development team behind Sonic Origins also expressed disappointment in the state of the game as it was released, saying that the final game was not what Sega became.
