St Heartless “Stay Hungry Be Loud”

The three-piece band from the western Sydney suburbs of Quakers Hill, North Rocks and Ermington have made a bold, loud and captivating contribution to the music scene.

Jim Magee, Mitch Sinden and Luke Vella bring a perfect mix of post-punk and garage rock to their new EP The Bite. Refreshingly candid and cool, with alA bit of punk here, a bit of metal there, a dash of country and a dash of indie trappings, St Heartless is emerging as a very solid act.

With the driving force of hunger propelling the trio forward, they are on a steady and definite trajectory to achieve their heart’s desires. We caught up with St Heartless to discuss, among other things, the beauty that lies in creating your own creative community and the collaborative hand that the audience has in your creative process.

Glad: Hi St Heartless, thanks for taking the time to chat with us today.

Heartless Saint: Greetings for having us

Glad: What are you doing today?

Heartless Saint: Today, we are all at work, or possibly getting over a hangover. Most likely both.

Glad: Tell us about your suburb, what do you love/don’t love about where you live?

Heartless Saint: We are all from different western suburbs. Quaker Hill, North Rocks and Ermington. They all came together as one here. The people, the culture and the intensity of it all. There’s little chance of getting a gig here, but we make it work at other venues in this beautiful city.

Glad: Describe your average work day?

Heartless Saint: The average workday differs among the three. Luke works in retail stores in Parramatta Westfield, Mitch occasionally on weekends and some weekdays and Jimmy has just started his big job, working full time as an environmental consultant. A bit of a mix really.

Glad: What about your last day?

Heartless Saint: last day? Probably sitting in a pub with the gang, having a beer and maybe retiring to a garage somewhere to write the best album the world has ever heard.

Glad: Study or self-taught?

Heartless Saint: A little out of column A, a little out of column B. We all start with different instruments and end up here self-taught. Jimmy played piano when he was younger and realized “that’s bullshit, I want something to cut my fingers off” and started bleeding on the guitar necks. He is a bit of a pervert as well. Luke played the ukulele for a long time before realizing those strings were too thin for him. Now, he is the master of undertones. Mitch is our secret weapon. Dude has played saxophone and guitar forever, and soon realized that hitting skins is much more meditative. And no one can stop the guy.

Glad: Tell us about your creative community.

Heartless Saint: Our creative community is ourselves and the bands that inspire us, whether they are local bands or big international bands. There are a few local bands we play with regularly, we all seem to practice at six10 studios in Castle Hill. We also get a lot of inspiration from our regular fans. Which songs to keep playing, which songs to drop. All of that is based on audience reaction and feedback after the shows. We love connecting with those people more. It’s nice to hear directly from people who love what we do and keep coming back for more. We are always looking to make connections wherever we can because we know how much better our shows can do. Of course, our family and partners are also an important part of that.

Glad: How does each member of the band influence the creative process?

Heartless Saint: We all strive to make each song work well. Which is a breeze as a three piece band. If something sounds great, we keep it, if it doesn’t generate joy, it goes out the door with ego and pride. Marie Kondo style.

Glad: Can you tell us a bit about the creative/recording process of your new EP ‘The Bite’?

Heartless Saint: The EP has been a long time coming. We decided very early on that we wanted something as a base. Something we can whip up, and everyone can enjoy. A bit of punk here, a bit of metal there, a dash of country, and a dash of indie trappings. We didn’t want to be limited. Some of the songs have been in the works for years, so getting them out there is crazy.

Glad: What did you read or watch growing up that fueled your passion for music?

Heartless Saint: ACDC, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, great acts that opened our eyes to sex, drugs and rock and roll. And more importantly, realizing that we can do that too. Maybe even a little better.

Glad: What was the last thing you read or saw that opened your eyes and mind to a new perspective?

Heartless Saint: Charles Bukowski, The Prophet, Albert Camus, Scratch our manager, Norman Lindsey, poetry and strange surreal art that explained so much in so little.

Glad: What makes you happy?

Heartless Saint: East. All this. Not only the music but everything that surrounds it. Work at a job to pay the bills. Buy second-hand equipment and make it our own. Driving hours around the place to do a little concert in the middle of nowhere just to say “hey we did it”. Even times that feel like shit lead to something amazing. A new song. A new lesson learned. A new experience. But it’s all worth it in the end. As we say at St. Heartless HQ, “Stay Hungry, be loud.”
