Introduced during Season 2, the character of Max Mayfield (Maxine or MADMAX for friends) quickly became one of the most popular in the series. With her complicated history, her strong character, her flamboyant red mane and her look of a skateboarder of the time, Max stands out from the other members of the small Hawkins team. After a particularly traumatic end of season 3 for the young Max, we cannot say that this season 4 was an opportunity for her to rest. In Vecna’s crosshairs, the young girl did not go far from death. Fact confirmed by the Duffer brothers a short time ago.
Ross Duffer has indeed claimed that the events of this season 4 should be much more dramatic than what we have seen. Cornered by Vecna, Max was supposed to go there. “It’s a possibility we discussed. For a while, that’s what was supposed to happen. But in the end, we changed the plan… We wanted the season to end with more questions .It’s still pretty dark and we don’t really know if Max will recover.” If her future is still uncertain, the girl has therefore obtained a bit of reprieve, but until when? It will be up to season 5, the last of the series, to answer this question. But if we are talking to you about Max today, it is because we have just learned that she should have been played by another actress.
Sadie Sink too old for the role?
As you probably know, it is the young Sadie Sink who camps Max on the screen. Originally from Texas, little Sadie quickly fell in love with the theater, thanks in particular to her obsession with High School Musical. She therefore took lessons from the age of seven and quickly began to obtain small roles in important productions such as the series The Americans or the movies The Glass Castle and Outsider. But, like most of his companions on Stranger Thingsshe really became known thanks to her first appearance in the Netflix series in 2017. She was then 15 years old, while her character was only 13. The gap is even greater today. If in season 4, Max was 15 years old, Sadie is 5 more today. It may be a detail for you, but for casting managers it means a lot.
It is indeed because of her age that she was initially refused the role. But the little one does not budge. Feeling both close to Max on certain points and very interested in the role, she begins to beg the casting directors to be able to show what she is worth and what she could bring to the character. Intrigued, the latter decide to see what a scene with Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas). The chemistry is there and Sadie’s mission is successful: she gets the role of Max Mayfield. Today, her life has changed profoundly, but she says she is delighted to share this experience with the other members of the cast:
It’s a very peculiar and bizarre situation that I and the rest of the cast are going through because the world knows who our characters are while we’re still trying to figure out who we are as people. I think being in this industry makes you grow and mature faster. But overall it’s just too much fun because the whole cast is going through it together.
