We’re not going to lie to each other: Super Mario Bros the Movie, expected in theaters on April 5, 2023, promises to be a little gem and probably the adaptation we’ve always dreamed of. We are impatient and the opportunity is thus given for certain companies to bring out Super Mario Bros, the first American film devoted to the plumber brothers. And as much to say that it is not really the same thing.
Because yes, a live-action film – with real actors and not computer graphics, therefore – was actually released in 1993. And although it was a general critical failure, the feature film nevertheless remained anchored in pop culture for its very relative, but frankly unique sense of adaptation. Actually, it can be said in many ways that this is a funny film in spite of itself.

Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, Super Mario Bros at least has the merit of offering a unique vision of the Nintendo saga. Here, Mario and Luigi (respectively played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) are two Italian-American plumbers, who find themselves sucked into a parallel dimension. From there, they must battle King Koopa, leading an army of humanoid dinosaurs, and rescue Princess Daisy.
We simply advise you to see the teaser to understand what it is all about. The funny thing is that Shigery Miyamoto, creator of Mario, is credited as co-writer! An adaptation with an almost parodic flavor, but which really tried to impose itself in the Hollywood industry with renowned actors, what’s more.
whatever, this Blu-Ray reissue just might be a rare piece in your collection. And if you want to impress the gallery, or at least surprise them, you know you can do it with this film.
