Sega’s ‘open zone’ Sonic Frontiers is racing towards its November 8th release and we now have a bit more context around the boss battles and how Super Sonic will factor into them.
Speaking with Golden News, Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto states that Super Sonic will be required to defeat certain bosses found within open zones:
“Normally in Sonic games you will come across a boss and fight them like a normal Blue Sonic. In Sonic Frontiers, there will be bosses that Blue Sonic won’t even be able to scratch. But if you collect and use all seven Chaos Emeralds, you can turn into Super Sonic and then fight those bosses. Going Super Sonic is going to be the only way to fight them.”
The hint here is that bosses within Sonic Frontiers can potentially be discovered on the fly, requiring the player to retreat, collect the required Chaos Emeralds, and return with the ability to transform into Super Sonic. It’s certainly a drastic change from previous Sonic games, which usually saved Super Sonic until the final battle. Kishimoto suggests that there will be some bosses in the game that will feel just as difficult as a final boss:
“Until now in Sonic games, Super Sonic only spawned against the last boss. Imagine if the first boss in Sonic Frontiers was as strong as those bosses.”
The Super Sonic ability was showcased in a recent trailer for TGS 2022, during which we see our hero being thrown off a cliff by a hulking boss, only to return later harnessing the full power of the Chaos Emeralds.
