The best classes to play in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age Inquisition is generally considered a big step up from the poor environments and rushed story of Dragon Age II, with a more balanced choice of classes than in the original Dragon Age: Origins. As with previous entries, there are three core classes to choose from in Inquisition, each with a trio of subclasses that allow players to further adapt to their playstyle. Choosing the right class can greatly impact both how players approach combat and how characters interact with the Arbiter.

The best classes to play in Dragon Age: Inquisition

One of the biggest criticisms of Origins was that playing as a class other than a mage offered significantly more fun combat options than the other classes. That is less the case in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The three main classes in the game, Warrior, Rogue, Y Wizard all offer fun combat options. Warriors in Dragon Age: Inquisition offer the best health and can wear any armor in the game. They can deliver wide, powerful blows with two-handed weapons or focus on defense with a weapon and shield. In the rare cases where your Inquisitor is forced to fight alone in the game, warriors offer the best survivability, but playing with a weapon and shield lacks many of the flashy abilities that other classes have. This is one of the easiest classes to play, leaning towards direct and aggressive tactics, and is a good choice for players who want to charge straight into battle.

Warrior’s subclasses are:

  • Champion: This subclass focuses on weapon and shield abilities, making them best for luring enemies in and tanking enemies. Blackwall takes this subclass.
  • Looter: Reavers focus on dealing heavy damage with their two-handed weapon abilities. They can fight large groups of enemies at once. Iron Bull takes this subclass.
  • Templar: This subclass specializes in interrupting enemy mages, draining their mana. They also deal bonus damage to demons, which appear in abundance throughout the game. Cassandra takes the Templar subclass.

The other non-magical class in Dragon Age: Inquisition is the Rogue, which gives players the opportunity to deal devastating damage in melee or with ranged attacks. They are highly mobile, disappearing and reappearing just in time to attack enemies from behind. Rogues benefit from attacking enemies that are already engaged with allies, relying on warriors to stack damage.

Rogues have less health than warriors, so they require a bit more tactical thinking than their more brutal counterparts. What they lack in durability they make up for in their ability to deal heavy damage and quickly get out of combat. Players who choose to play a Rogue can specialize in two builds of dagger fighting or archery. Both have their strengths, although bows don’t offer the same damage as dual dagger abilities. You need a rogue in the party, not only for his damage, but because he can open locked chests that are found on the map.

Rogue’s subclasses are:

  • architect: All Rogues can lay traps and mines to confuse the enemy, but no one does it better than Artificer. They are well suited for an archery build to keep them and the party safe. Varric will naturally take the Artificer subclass.
  • Killer: Assassins not only deal higher damage than the other subclasses, they can also weaken powerful enemies and leave them vulnerable to subsequent attacks. Cole takes this subclass, which is better suited to two dagger builds.

Most of the conflict in Dragon Age: Inquisition revolves around what to do with mages who have broken free of Templar control, so playing one gives the player the most freedom to impact the story and control combat. They are the class that requires the most tactical planning, as many spells can damage both friend and foe, depending on the difficulty level.

Wizards won’t do you any favors during the parts of the game where the Inquisitor travels alone. Their lack of armor and low health makes them the most fragile class. However, with a tank in the group to draw attention away from them, mages have the most fun options in combat. From raining down fire from above to locking enemies’ minds in cages of torment and buffing and healing the rest of the party, you need at least one mage in your party if you want to save the world.

The Wizard subclasses are:

  • Gentleman-Charming: While most mage builds forego close combat, Knight-Charmers enjoy it. They can produce spirit blades that deal heavy damage. With the right spells to increase their mobility on the battlefield, Knight-Charmers can be very effective both up close and from a distance. Vivienne takes the Knight-Enchanter subclass.
  • Rift Wizard: Controlling the battlefield is the name of the game for Rift Mages. They can lock enemies in place and deal incredibly high damage. Many of his area effect spells stack with each other, meaning they can be devastating in boss fights where a large enemy has trouble avoiding his spells. Solas takes the Rift Mage subclass.
