The next entries in the Pokémon series are just around the corner, and thanks to Pokémon Presents on August 2, we now have a better understanding of what to expect from them. With a new region, Pokemon, characters, mechanics, and a non-linear branching story, there’s a lot to get excited about in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, so here’s a recap to (hopefully) get you excited as I was.
types of earth
Alright, let’s get down to the more serious stuff before this leads me into talking about Mr. Jacq and Sprigatito. Almost every Pokemon game has its own unique gimmick, and Scarlet and Violet is no exception. The newest feature to come to the series is terastallization, or the process of transforming Pokemon into crystallized versions of themselves with enhanced abilities and even new types. In addition to being mostly attractive, Terastal Pokémon add a unique element to battles in that they change which Pokémon are effective against each other. It is safe to say that this ability could be affected in dangerous situations.
Three separate campaigns
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet follow your student-turned-Pokémon trainer as they embark on a school-ordered “scavenger hunt,” though exactly what that treasure is hasn’t been specified (my money’s on “friends along the way”) . However, once the hunt has begun, they are free to follow three different story campaigns in any order they choose. While one of these stories is the typical “defeat all eight gym leaders and become the Pokemon champion” plot we all know and love, the other two journeys have yet to be revealed. Additionally, those eight Gym Leaders can now be defeated in any order. Many people have suspected that the Pokémon games would become progressively more open-ended, and it seems that’s exactly what’s happening.
Your school environment
Overall, Scarlet and Violet’s scenario looks inspired, but I’m particularly a fan of Game Freak’s decision to make your kind of “center” a school. While not everyone is a fan of the uniforms (fingers crossed we continue to have clothing options as solid as the Sword and Shield options), I think the student element makes a lot of narrative sense and helps flesh out the wonderful world of Pokémon. .
This alembic of Sprigatito
Yes, I am a tattooed bisexual woman and a lover of astrology on the Internet. Yes, I love cats. and if I Will be choosing Sprigatito as my headline. However, even though I made my choice the moment I saw the headlines for the Paldean region, this image alone made me certain my choice was the best. Don’t get me wrong Fuecoco and Quaxly are adorable and I respect those who choose them instead but I would leave my life for this little baby. Single Look to the. Wow.
This could be another example of us never knowing exactly what the internet will be fully attached to when new gameplay footage is revealed. Paldean Wooper’s Pokémon fan art is already taking off, with many affectionately calling the little guy a um… killjoy.
Personally, I think they’re reminiscent of America’s favorite (unique?) malted milk balls, Whoppers, but each has its own thing. Either way, he’s looking to be a true star of the show, and I’m excited to see what Paldean Quagsire will finally look like.
ATVs that are also Pokémon?
Move over, Rotom, there’s two new utility Pokémon in town. It turns out that the legendary Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Koraidon and Miraidon, are legendary for a reason: they double as all-terrain vehicles. I’m still not sure how I feel about their ability to transform into wheeled vehicles that can traverse land and sea, climb mountains, and fly through the air, but it’s a unique and convenient feature. Plus, with Scarlet and Violet’s four-person co-op enabled, you can also use them to compete with your friends, adding a whole new element of fun to the series.
When I was a child, all my Pokémon and Yugioh cards were stolen, and it was devastating. However, even though I had much rarer cards, including many great French and Japanese cards I had picked up while traveling, the one I missed the most was my Flying Pikachu card. That said, I am so excited to be able to catch and train him in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Also, his new Tera Type gives him an incredible advantage in battles. While Ground-type Pokemon can annihilate Electric-types, they’re weak to Flying, giving it a hidden advantage.
Pokémon used to be simple. Game Freak used to spell “snake” backwards, paint a snake purple, and call it a day. Now we have chandeliers, piles of garbage, ice cream and more, and I think we’re better off for it. The newest rare Pokémon to join the mix is Fidough, a fairy-type Pokémon that is shaped like a dog and made of bread. As a lover of dogs, carbs, and those teddy bear-shaped loaves of bread you can buy in San Francisco, I adore this pup. I want him as a baking partner and loyal companion. And bonus: there are also plenty of clever options for variants and evolutions, fan art of which is already making the rounds on Twitter and Reddit. Will they go with Purebread? Doll? The puns, and the cuteness, never end.
literally every character
To quote one of my favorite TikTok sounds of all time, “Capitalism really happened today.” All the character designs in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are great and kinda thirsty. I mean, just look at this scruffy professor, aka Mr. Jacq. And don’t even get me started on Garcha and teachers Sada and Turo. But apart from the thirst, there is what’s more There seems to be an interesting assortment of classmates to just hang out with, like Arven, Nemona, and Penny, and plenty of other cool characters to battle and befriend.
