Game News The Callisto Protocol: the reason for the withdrawal from the PUBG universe mentioned by the creator of Dead Space like

Developed by Striking Distance, a subsidiary of the group behind PUBG, The Callisto Protocol was to take place in the world of the famous Battle-Royale before going it alone. A decision explained recently by Glen Schofield, the father of this thrilling new horror game.

The Callisto Protocol and the PUBG Extended universe

It’s no secret: The Callisto Protocol was originally thought to be part of the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds universe. This link, as curious as it may now seem, actually finds its source within the filiation between Striking Distance, the studio in charge of the development of this new survival-horror, and Krafton, the group which manages PUBG and house- mother of Striking Distance.

The Callisto Protocol: the reason for the withdrawal from the PUBG universe mentioned by the creator of Dead Space like

If the link between these two games really existed at the start, Striking Distance teams ultimately chose to walk away from PUBG. A decision that was made naturally according to Glen Schofield, father of dead space and creator of The Callisto Protocol. The president of the studio recently explained this turn taken during the writing process.

When we arrived (at Krafton), a team was in charge of writing the universe (of PUBG) and they answered questions like “Where does PUBG start? What context does the game set in? ” They’re writing this giant timeline, which our authors were initially contributing to. Our game took place in the Timeline, but fits far enough in it, and ended up alone (…).

We understand in fact that the teams grouped under the aegis of Krafton work together to contribute to the development of a gigantic game universe, in which the apps of the different studios should take place. But finally, the fact that The Callisto Protocol depicts events within such an advanced future logically distanced the game from PUBG.

A selling point to players

If the writing process naturally led to this separation between the universes of each game, why then initially choose to register The Callisto Protocol within the same chronology as PUBG? Glen Schofield recently answered this question by providing some details on this choice during an interview with GameInformer. We understand that PUBG was above all a selling point.

Because (PUBG) is such a popular game, could we ride that wave? (…) It worked at first, it really worked. But we are past that stage.

With the recent reactions of the public after the various appearances of The Callisto Protocol during this month of June, there is no doubt that the software has been able to emancipate itself from its elder. We obviously hope that the game will find its audience and become a worthy successor to Dead Space. To find out, we will have to wait until the release of The Callisto Protocol December 2 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
