Fate found a way, as Michael Giacchino reveals there was no second choice for the title role in werewolf at night Yes Gael Garcia Bernal did not sign on the dotted line.

The comic book character has been far from a household name, but now the Giacchino-directed Disney Plus special has given him a big boost. Following a surprise advance screening at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, fans were treated to a Q&A with Giacchino, who had plenty to say about the project.

One of the biggest questions asked was the casting process and if there were any other names he had considered for the part.

“When I started thinking about this, the only person I had in mind for this role, and this is the honest truth, was Gael. I had worked with him on a movie called Coconut. He’s amazing in that movie, as he is in everything he does. He kept thinking ‘he’s the perfect person for a wolf’. I didn’t want a giant buff person, I just need an honest person. He embodied that role in a way that no one else did.”

Continuing, Giacchino talked about him offering the role, and the intense fear he had of being rejected by the cast of his dreams. Quite the contrary, since Bernal was on board, and particularly happy that there was no corporal.

“I was wondering what would happen if he says no, because I don’t have a second choice. But luckily, she didn’t say no. Instantly, as immediately, she was in […] I was also so happy that I didn’t have to wear a cape.”

werewolf at night it also introduces several new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Elsa Bloodstone and the Man-Thing. The latter of which was surprisingly practical on set, as the team used various methods to make it work.

The special is set to be just that: a special. Giacchino later says that he has no projects in the works beyond that, but concept art from Disney Parks has seen both Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night coming to Avengers Campus soon.

werewolf at night will be available to stream on Disney Plus starting October 7.
