With Disney Plus Day in full swing, a slew of new content has hit the streaming giant, from Thor: love and thunder to a BTS concert movie.

It also received what could be the most moving docuseries the platform has ever seen in the form of Growinga 10-episode docuseries created by Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame), with each episode focusing on a young man, referred to in the series as a “hero”, and his remarkable experiences with growing up, using a narrative, documentary, and experimental cinematic lens.

In a group interview with Moviefone, Larson and three of the heroes – Alex Crotty, Sage Grace Dolan-Sandrino and Emily Flores – discussed the nuance and importance behind the series.

Larson, who came up with the idea after digging into her own personal struggles, identified the real coming-of-age stories that need this kind of attention, given how crucial it is to shaping who we are.

I realized that the people I loved the most in my life were clinging to things that they thought were embarrassing and that were not at all. So, that was the beginning of this, which then turned into this after many years of thinking about it and talking about it. It became this series, focusing on coming of age.

Crotty, whose story focuses on his struggles with depression throughout his teens, took particular note of the camaraderie between the heroes and how all the stories share common ground while being so diverse.

We all had to go through the process of sharing our stories. So, there was so much compassion between us and it felt very natural to be able to talk to these people. These are going to be my friends for life. I adore you so much.

Dolan-Sandrino, whose experience as a young trans woman of color is explored during her story, commented that her story is one she needed to hear as a child, given the relative absence of her demographic throughout media history. .

I’m excited because I know that this show and my episode was something that I needed to grow. I had no representations of what it was like to be trans, to be a trans woman of color, to be a young trans woman. I didn’t get much chance to even see what it would be like for me after high school, because I couldn’t imagine anything beyond it.

And Flores, whose story focuses on her experiences as a young disabled woman, further addressed the need for greater representation, and how it not only benefits those who see themselves represented with respect, but also those who don’t belong to that demographic, and those who they may have pre-existing pre-existing notions about such demographics, which could be overturned by adequate representation.

I just think it’s so rare in the media right now to see a completely dimensional, completely honest and representative story about disability let alone a young disabled person. So what I really hope kids of all ages take away from is that they see that being different and accepting our differences is not a bad thing.

Growing is available to stream on Disney Plus.
