Awards season has only just begun, with the annual parade of prestige images gearing up to take aim squarely at the hearts and minds of voters around the world, but the Oscars have already made quite a splash after RRR was rejected as India’s submission in the Best International Film category in favor of latest movie show.
While we’re not here to rain down on the film’s parade receiving the go-ahead, it’s worth noting that social media exploded in a fit of deranged fury and rage after discovering that director SS. Rajamouli had been overlooked, which certainly didn’t make much sense.
After all, RRR it earned more than $150 million at the box office in the midst of becoming an international cultural phenomenon, before sinking its teeth into a whole new set of fans once it was available on Netflix. Add a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 92 percent and a user rating of 94, and it’s mind-boggling that it didn’t secure the nomination.
However, in the news everyone has been waiting for, RRR he has now announced his intentions to do a play for the main drive of the Academy Awards. As you can imagine, Twitter is losing its mind and crossing its fingers at the same time.
Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Song, Best Original Screenplay, and a host of technical awards are the ultimate benchmark, though how many (if any) remains to be seen. RRR will really ensure once the candidates are confirmed.
Regardless of what happens, the gloriously insane blend of action, drama, romance and comedy deserves to at least be in the conversation as it remains at the forefront of pop culture nearly seven months after its initial release.
