the Harry Potter Y Star Wars Franchises are among the most beloved in popular culture, and many iterative installments or IPs have been produced from their original roots through many avenues of media. I like it Star Wars before that, fans are possibly more familiar with the Harry Potter franchise through its original lead characters. In Star Wars, this belongs to Luke Skywalker and many other characters who have led their own trilogies. Harry Potter, rather, led an entire saga of eight films, and has become inseparable from the franchise as a result.
However, one way these franchises have tried to grow within their respective worlds is to introduce fans to a new lead character in familiar settings. That way, fans are lulled into nostalgia for familiar iconography while new characters are introduced as its main narrative vessels. This is the case of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order‘s Cal Kestis, as it is with Hogwarts LegacyThe anonymous protagonist. Both characters harbor similarities with each other that may echo comparable story beats between Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Y Hogwarts Legacy.
The protagonists of Star Wars Jedi and Hogwarts Legacy offer something new
Each character offers a new perspective from an unfamiliar face in a familiar fictional setting or landscape. This obviously allows each franchise to tell a new story from a new perspective, and often within a part of the canon that hasn’t been touched much. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place recently after the Jedi Purge from the perspective of a lone Padawan, for example, while Hogwarts Legacy takes place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 19th century, where developer WB Games Avalanche may have its own standalone narrative.
Cal possesses a Force ability called Psychometry in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order which offers him extrasensory perception through the physical touch of an object, such as being able to see what had happened to Trilla Suduri after he had held her lightsaber. This ability seems unique to Cal, and the mystery of the ancient Zeffo species leads Cal and the Stinger Mantis crew to locate a Jedi holocron to find Force-sensitive children. In a vision, Cal sees what can be interpreted as the inevitable fate of this path, ultimately causing Cal to decide not to seek out Force-sensitives so as not to willingly put them in harm’s way.
Very similar Star Wars Jedi: Fallen OrderThe mystery of the Zeffo, as well as Cal’s Force Empathic ability, Hogwarts Legacy has teased the mystery of ancient magic, which the player character is supposedly capable of handling. This is portrayed in Hogwarts LegacyThe State of Play gameplay trailer shows off any magical interactions the protagonist has that don’t require a wand, such as when touching a mirror next to Professor Eleazar Fig turns it into a stone wall. It seems as if the protagonist’s fondness for Ancient Magic allows them to reveal obscured artifacts or structures that others cannot, and may also contribute to why the protagonist is only now attending Hogwarts as a late-entering fifth-year student.
Cal Kestis may lead Star Wars Jedi, but Hogwarts Legacy has the benefit of character customization
Of course, players are already aware of the implications Cal’s abilities have had on Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderweather Hogwarts Legacy‘s Ancient Magic will remain a mystery until the game launches this year. Ancient Magic could determine the loose lineage of the protagonist, or even link him to whoever the main antagonist of the game is.
There is an important consideration to make regarding the protagonists of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Y Hogwarts Legacy. Cal Kestis, being a named protagonist with scripted dialogue and a predetermined character model, can lead the star wars jedi franchise for the number of deliveries that Respawn decides to develop. Cal can guide the Mantis team through any narrative beat. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor presents and remains the face of this new Star Wars IP.
Instead, the protagonist of Hogwarts Legacy it’s fully customizable, right down to the selection of which Hogwarts house they belong to, and so having the same lead character in a sequel would be particularly difficult, barring transfer save states. This benefits Hogwarts Legacy as players can more succinctly immerse themselves in the simulation of being a Hogwarts student and the future Hogwarts Legacy the sequels would probably do the same.
But because the protagonist is a player avatar and not an ultimate character, it makes less sense to have Hogwarts Legacy establish your own franchise of direct sequels the way you Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has. While Cal and Hogwarts LegacyThe protagonist shares multiple similarities as new and unique characters in their own games, they also have some considerable differences between them in terms of what their franchises can accomplish with them at the helm.
Hogwarts Legacy releases in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
