Netflix’s new thriller The Watcher has broken into the number one spot on the streamer’s top 10 list. The show, co-created by Ryan Murphy, has dethroned Murphy’s other true crime series, Dahmer – Monster: Jeffrey Dahmer’s record-breaking series for Netflix.
The Watcher follows the Broaddus family who spends all of their savings moving into their dream home in suburban New Jersey. However, things start to go wrong when they are plagued by sinister letters from someone calling himself “the Watcher”. Things get even worse when her neighbors start acting strange and spooky goings on inside her new house.
The show is currently top rated in 89 countries around the world, including the UK and the US, and it achieved all of this amid wildly mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike. The Watcher has a critic score of 38 percent and an audience score of 43 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. (opens in a new tab)
“You’re better off just reading the long article about the real story,” writes a Rotten Tomatoes ratings reviewer. (opens in a new tab). “This is really impossible to see.” Another agreed, adding: “It was a real waste of time. Laborious, pointless and poorly acted, it’s just bad.”
“The Watcher is ridiculously sparse and plays out more like a dark comedy than anything else,” says another reviewer. “A significant tonal departure from the chilling source material of the Netflix series.”
However, some viewers enjoyed it and praised how it built tension throughout its seven episodes. “This TV show drives you crazy,” writes one. “I couldn’t stop looking, wanting to know the result.” A second viewer says, “Ryan Murphy knows how to make good television.”
Dahmer has also had mixed responses from viewers, despite earning a spot on Netflix’s list of the most-watched shows of all time. The series is based on the real-life murders of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, focusing on telling the stories of the victims.
