The rumor about a possible sequel to the king woman it’s escalating, with a famous cast member already imagining a potential plot.

speaking to Variety, South African star Athuso Mbedu shared that his co-star John Boyega has developed an intriguing concept for a sequel to the critically acclaimed film. She describes Boyega’s vision as a deep dive into the complex nature of his character, King Ghezo, whom the story depicts as a usurper and slave trader. Boyega suggests that the next installment of the film explore the dark aspects of the monarch’s rule and the infighting in his kingdom.

“John’s idea is incredible… Basically going back to the Dahomey story, where [Ghezo] not really a favorable king in actual history. He would want us to touch on that in the second. What if we see him more as a villain? That kind of situation. And I was like, ‘That’s good!’ It would be great to see it in a different light.”

He explained that the film’s director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, is not normally interested in making sequels, but changed her mind when Mbedu told her about Boyega’s idea.

“I texted Gina the other day about it. [and] she was like, ‘Oh, actually that might work,’ and then she started brainstorming and I was like, ‘Gina, go to sleep!’ And she said, ‘No, my mind is already working.’ So we don’t know. Only Sony will tell us.”

While it’s still too early for the studio to commit to a sequel, earlier this week Sony Motion Picture Group Co-Chairman Josh Greenstein and TriStar Pictures President Nicole Brown expressed their pride in the resounding success. of the movie. They both agree that a sequel could be on the cards if strong audience engagement continues.
