The Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is studying a possible graphic engine change for the franchise.
The Yakuza saga has been gaining popularity in the West over the years, but this is not only due to the narrative and the possibilities they offer from the beginning. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, but the fact that they manage to transport you so faithfully to Japan is very important. Now that the franchise has changed its name, it is likely that we will see changes in this regard.
And it is that, in statements collected by Golden News, the executive producer Masayoshi Yokoyama has recognized that they have a great challenge ahead regarding how they work with the graphics. “The Dragon Engine is a bit old right now,” says Yokoyama, who assures that if they want to continue updating it, they will have to apply much larger changes than those seen since 2016.
They worry that Unreal Engine 5 will look better in the daytime and in the wildThe other option handled in the study is try to work with Unreal Engine 5, the engine of Epic. “Regarding Unreal Engine 5, yes, we are studying it,” explains the producer. “The Dragon Engine is perfectly designed to represent a city at night, a night city. Whereas, Unreal is better at showing nature, daylight and those kinds of feelings.”
Due to this dilemma and the importance of the night in the series, it is not clear if they will make the leap sooner or later, but it should be noted that it is a step they have already taken with Like a Dragon: Ishin!, the remake samurai game that bet on Unreal Engine 4 to improve its graphics.
In addition to Ishin! which, as we say, bets on Unreal Engine to revamp the old graphics, from SEGA they surprised us a few days ago with the announcement of the Yakuza’s eighth numbered installmentwhich is now called Like a Dragon 8 and is scheduled for 2024. Before that, a more restrained title will arrive that will connect the sixth and seventh installments, under the name Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.
