Happy Thursday, people. Even though the big announcement season just passed, it seems that some developers didn’t quite get the note, as we’ve had some more exciting (and not-so-exciting) announcements over the last week and a half. So much more to talk about.
Some of the big announcements we’ve discussed this week include Hyenas, Sega’s new IP-obsessed co-op shooter which has had a bit of a rough announcement, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which we’ve already started theorizing about, and the recent release of Disney’s Mirrorverse, which is a rough mix of great ideas and horrible monetization.
Beyond that, we also have a Breath of the Wild piece that looks into the future and how exciting it can be, and a Resident Evil feature that looks into the past and what we can learn from it. That’s right baby, with pieces about the past, present, future and multiverses, TheGamer covers all time and space.
Sega’s Hyenas Look Like Another Battle Royale Tired Experiment
Let’s start with something incredibly timely, an attitude Sega probably should have had before releasing a Fortnite-style multiplayer game three years late. Just yesterday, Sega revealed its big “super game”, Hyenas, without showing any gameplay and relying solely on a recognizable IP. TheGamer’s editor-in-chief Stacey Henley rightly says that this is incredibly tone deaf of Sega and a clear sign that it’s just trying to do what’s most profitable.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth should make Zack sacrifice himself for Aerith
Fortunately, not all of the big reveals have been disappointing over the past week. Square Enix decided to show off its wonderful suite of Final Fantasy 7 games, including Crisis Core – Reunion and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Finally being able to see the second part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project has kick-started the theory-crafting brain of lead feature editor Jade King. His big theory is that Final Fantasy’s most charming man, Zack Fair, needs to sacrifice himself to save Aerith in that infamous scene, which goes perfectly with the Remake’s idea of breaking established canon.
Disney Mirrorverse is so close to not being mobile game crap
In the latest timely piece of the week, features editor Eric Switzer has been playing Disney’s latest mobile release, Mirrorverse, and he has pretty mixed feelings about it. On the plus side, the Mirrorverse versions of Disney characters are all witty and make unique changes to the characters, making them feel unique and worthy of the multiverse twist. On the downside, however, are the time-wasting and monetization tactics that are all too often associated with mobile gaming. Close, but not close enough.
Breath Of The Wild 2 Needs Proper Dungeons
Let’s look into the near future, hopefully near. Features editor Ben Sledge has been eyeing the untitled sequel to Breath of the Wild thanks to a recent iteration of Link’s Awakening remake and thinks Breath of the Wild 2 should include proper dungeons. Though he doesn’t hold out much hope that we’ll get traditional dungeons, Ben argues that we need to see some kind of innovation in the Divine Beasts in Link’s big adventure, preferably one that brings them closer to the dungeons we all know and love.
The subtle terror of Resident Evil’s iconic ‘Turning Around Zombie’
Finally, let’s reflect a little and look at the past to finish this summary. Feature Editor Andy Kelly has been doing what he does best and looking into the influence of older games, this time taking a look at the original Resident Evil and its “Turning Around Zombie.” Andy explains exactly why this moment works so well and why future iterations are a little less interesting by showing the whole picture instead of being subtle.
