This is this free open source ‘Age of Empires’, and its 26 updates prove that releasing it was a good idea

‘0 AD’ has been expanding its strategy experience with the help of multiple developers.

We have had to wait many years to see the return of age of empires, and, as of October 2021, we can say that Age of Empires IV is a reality. This installment will continue to expand your strategy experience with varied civilizations, but there are players who have not missed one of the most iconic franchises in the genre. Why? Well, because they had discovered the ‘0 AD’ project.

0 AD It started out as a mod Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings, but its creators ended up getting rid of this nature in order to develop an independent title. However, in 2009 they made an unusual decision in the sector: to turn it into a game of Open Source under GPLv2 license, share all graphic resources used so far licensed under Creative Commons CC BY-SA and release original soundtrack.

While this may sound crazy, this idea has been the reason that 0 AD has become a collaborative project loaded with campaigns and features. In the end, 100+ developers have participated throughout the 26 updates of the game (one for each letter of the alphabet), which include new civilizations and notable improvements.

In this way, we are talking about a work in constant development that does not intend to get rid of its “alpha” label, as it still continues to receive content-laden patches. The last to arrive, corresponding to the letter Z, serves as a tribute to the Chinese philosopher Zhuang Zhou, better known as Zhuangzi, and introduces the Han civilizationwhich has its own technologies, art, buildings and strategies.
