Director Taika Waititi has confirmed that a joke in the third act of Thor: Love and Thunder was, as many thought, a reference to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Below are spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder.
Thanks to Korg’s voiceover, we learn that he has found his own mate as the MCU movie draws to its conclusion. He is holding hands in a lava puddle with his new partner Dwayne, who is also made of rocks.
In response to a fan who pointed out the similarities between Dwayne made of rocks and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Waititi said on Twitter that it was “not a coincidence”, confirming that the name was very intentional.
Waititi and star Chris Hemsworth, however, were a little more surprised by something else that made the cut: a post-credits message that “Thor will be back.”
“I’m not kidding. I saw it in the theater and I was like, ‘Oh shit. Really?’ Even Chris was like, ‘What?'” Waititi told Insider. (opens in a new tab). “But of course he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I can be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch.”
In the meantime, Johnson will appear in a true superhero movie as Black Adam. The DC movie will be released in theaters on October 21, 2022.
