Two new characters move to Riverdale in 2022’s Archie’s Halloween Spectacular #1 (opens in a new tab)– the aptly named Trick and Treat, a sentient pumpkin with bat wings and a ghost, respectively.

Trick and Treat was designed by Archie Comics art director Vincent Lovallo, according to CBR. (opens in a new tab). The company’s editor-in-chief, Mike Pellerito, wanted Halloween mascots similar to Jingles the Elf and Sugar Plum.
“Their proportions needed to be similar to those characters, but with a more Funko Pop or Chibi design, and they would be a play on the classic concept of an angel or demon on a person’s shoulders,” says Lovallo. “However, despite those attributes, both characters are equally Halloween spirits, so naturally they can be quite scary if need be with their shape-shifting abilities.”
Trick represents the scary side of Halloween while Treat represents the sweet side. The characters will make their debut in Archie’s Halloween Spectacular #1’s first story, “Spirits of Halloween,” written by Ian Flynn, drawn by Ryan Jampole, colored by Glenn Whitmore and lettered by Jack Morelli.
“Trick and Treat may be new characters, but they would feel right at home with the classic creations,” says Flynn. “Since they are the spirits of Halloween, I wanted to make sure none of them were the ‘good’ ones or the ‘bad’ ones. They are both about having fun and enjoying the holidays, but they both have a bit of a mischievous streak. I hope people enjoy them and we get to see more of them in the future.”
Adds Jampole, “What I really enjoy about them is that they’re spirits, they’re really rubbery and expressive and they allowed me a lot of freedom to stretch and squash them into all sorts of silly poses. They were really fun to draw.” that along with the slightly more grounded Archie characters.”
