With the arrival of TikTok, other social networks had to adapt their strategies to avoid being eaten by the Chinese giant. And for Instagram, the year 2022 has not been easy, far from it…

Instagram and the “war” against TikTok

The year 2022 has clearly not been a long calm river for Meta! With mixed results on all points, the group led by Mark Zuckerberg had to make strong choices to restore its image. This has notably gone through strategies, which have been applied to the various applications of the American giant. Instagram has also been one of the most affected applications, so that it can compete with TikTok – the Chinese application has been winning everything for a few years.

Remember, we were in the middle of summer 2022, when social network users decided to express their dissatisfaction with the direction their favorite application was taking. A petition supported by Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner had even emerged and therefore prompted Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, to speak out. The latter then explained that the video was going to occupy an increasingly important place to the detriment of the photos.

More recently, the head of the social network again took the floor via his personal account to answer questions that users may have. And unfortunately – for photography lovers – his answers may not please everyone.

Apologies in the wind?

For those who use Instagram, you probably know that photos have made the social network what it is today. Nevertheless, the arrival of TikTok changed everything and forced Adam Mosseri, and his teams, to push the video to the forefront (Reels, full screen video, …). The CEO, who is aware of this situation, has therefore stepped up to reassure (or not) his users.

We certainly have a large number of photographers who were upset. I want to be clear: although we turn to video, we still value photos. Photos will always be part of Instagram.

He then adds “I think we focused too much on video in 2022.” During this Q&A, the businessman also explains that the shares between video and photo should gradually become equal again. Next to that, earlier this week, Instagram announced new features including silent mode and the ability to mark multiple posts as “uninteresting” in the Research tab. However, the announcement of these modifications / corrections is not likely to solve all the problems that may exist between users and the social network, which is definitely struggling to reinvent itself without looking like TikTok.
