business news Xbox: Microsoft declares itself “market leader” this beginning of the year, figures that are ahead of the PS5
Microsoft seems to have the wind in its sails in 2022: while the shortage rages and slows down sales of the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series is selling like hot cakes. And the American firm seems to be particularly proud of it.
Xbox ahead of PS5 in 2022?
As the Nintendo Switch quietly continues its overwhelming rise, the battle rages (once again) between Microsoft and Sony. This beginning of the year 2022 seems to mark a nice turning point for the American company which, for the first time, seems to record figures ahead of those of its Japanese competitor. In any case, this is what CEO Satya Nadella says: between January and March 2022, the Xbox Series outsold the PlayStation 5. Alas, no concrete sales figures are given to back up the claim.
However, the Redmond firm delivers other interesting data: during this period, at the beginning of 2022the revenue of its gaming sector increased by 6%, which corresponds to 3.74 billion dollars. A historic increase and excellent scores for Microsoft, which boasts the increase in the number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers, contributing directly to the increase in the “content and service” category, ie + 4%. Finally, the company states that ten million people have lent themselves to the game of Xbox Cloud Gaming. A land of the future, certainly.
Scarcity, indefatigable and tiring
The shortage, which affects the production of components specific to the PS5 and Xbox Series, has been happening for years now… and is still happening, to say the least. Despite the prolific launch of the PlayStation 5, its sales are hampered by this global problem: in other words, Sony could have done better, much better if the industry did not put a spoke in its wheels. On the Microsoft side, the observation is actually similar: certainly, the Xbox Series X is selling well, very well even when compared to the spin-offs of previous consoles released, but the shortage is preventing it from reaching its true potential.
However, Microsoft has its secret weapon. The very one that allows it to keep pace and get ahead of its historic rival: the Xbox Series S. Smaller, less powerful and not based on the same manufacturing processes, the little beast seems spared from the dreaded dry failure of semiconductors and is found everywhere, in all shops. And faced with demand, very greedy in video games, the offer corresponds to the market: we thus learned, at the end of 2021, that this model S was selling better than the model X in certain regions. Combined with the figures of the Series X, it thus allows an increase of 14% compared to the beginning of the year 2021. In short, a nice success story: to see now how the rest of the events will unfold, 2022 hosting some nice exclusives on the side of Sony… like God of War Ragnarok.
